中国农村妇女减贫概况及展望(英文版)

In China, both in society and family, the inequality between men and women is very serious in traditional Chinese rural areas. In the severe situation of rural poverty, the women’s poverty is particularly noteworthy.

Ever since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese government has worked hard to push forward gender equality. As a result, more and more women enjoy a better status and a large number of women have walked out of their homes and engaged in social labor. After 1980s, China has made worldrecognized achievements on poverty reduction.

Great progress has also been made on rural women’s poverty-reduction with rich experience gained during the process. The government has made policies that support alleviation of women’s poverty. Government, enterprises and social organizations all actively conduct poverty related activities and give particularly support to women.

These efforts have achieved demonstrable results on employment, education, medical services and involvement in social public affairs for women in poverty. The women’s poverty situation has been greatly relieved, yet there is still a long way to go for eliminating rural women’s poverty problem. The main reason for it lies in the giant poverty population, among which, more than 50% are women.

Generally, women have comparatively low education and medical level. They have fewer employing channels. Besides, in domestic house labor division, they have taken most of the unpaid housework. With fast economy development and rapid urbanization expansion, tendencies of rural rear-support women and agriculture feminization come into being.

In remote poor areas, the income gap between men and women is increasingly enlarged. Because of all these, when China is enforcing China Rural Poverty Alleviation and Development Program (2011-2020), the work on rural women’s poverty reduction is worthy of special attention.
