Rural Development Programme Brief

Rural development has been one of the major programmes of Oxfam Hong Kong.  Since 1987, OHK started its rural development programme and later expanded to the northwest region.  At present, the rural development programme areas cover Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Shaanxi, Gansu and Qinghai provinces.  This brief talks about the current situation and causes of rural poverty.  It highlights the objectives, strategies, milestones, major outputs and outcomes of rural development programme.  In the programme outcomes, good practices of four cases are highlighted: (1) model of sustainable eco-villages adapting proactively to climate change; (2) nurturing of community organizations in post-disaster sustainable development; (3) community-driven development programme to achieve innovation of participatory mode of poverty alleviation undertaken by the government; and (4) the development of ethnic minorities cultural development enhancing community cohesion.
